Local legend has it that people from nearby villages produced charcoal outside by burning wood in the wide valley of Belianske Tatry near the Biela stream. One of these workers built a small cottage and the only window in the cottage was positioned to let in the night light (called Zorničky) which in English means a kind of light aura. A few more cottages were built by the people that liked the mountain surroundings and they called their new settlement Zor – Ždiar.

The first written records about the Ždiar settlement date back to 1590, it is widely believed that village life started at the beginning of the second half of the sixteenth century. The founder was František Lužinský who was the keeper of the castle for the Horvat family, they were the biggest landlords in the North Spiš region.

The historical records from 1628 and 1629 in connection with Pavol Rákoci show that Ždiar was called possessiones village. The inhabitants were mainly tree fellers, charcoal makers and shepherds.

The foundation of new settlements was connected to the division of land, where the village territory was divided into equal areas for each family and they could only build houses on their own land. According to word of mouth passed down the generations the first settlers were in Bachledová valley. Afterwards new ones were formed in Antošovský and Slodičovský hills, and Pavlovska, Blasčacká and Bartušovská valleys.

Ždiar is one of the jewels of Slovakia with it's distinct mountain village traditions, customs and folklore culture with more than 1300 inhabitants. The village is unique by it's folk architecture influenced by Goral (mountain people) settlers. The whole terrority is within the protected Tatra National Park area (TANAP), Goliašova and Belianske Tatry nature reservations and is also under UNESCO and PRLA. Many species of endangered flora and fauna are found here and the countryside is part of the NECONET national ecological network.

The history, culture and natural beauty of the Tatra mountains, along with the well known local hospitality make this such an attractive destination for both Slovaks and foreign visitors.

Legenda o obci hovorí, že v lesoch v širokej Doline potoka Biela pod Belianskymi Tatrami pálili ľudia z okolitých dedín drevené uhlie. Jeden z uhliarov si postavil malú chalúpku a jediné okno na drevenici bolo obrátené na tú stranu, z ktorej do izby v noci svietilo svetlo „Zorničky“. Ľuďom, ktorým učarovalo tatranské prostredie si postavili dreveničky vedľa uhliara a svoju osadu pomenovali „Zor“ – Ždiar.

V listinách z roku 1628 a 1629, v súvislosti s panstvom Pavla Rákociho, už Ždiar nazývali obcou - possessiones.

Coat of Arms

The historic Ždiar coat of arms has a church motif and became the official village symbol from 1989. It portrays the biblical scene of Virgin Mary with a halo standing next to St. Elizabeth without a halo and is connected to the village Church of the same name. This scene was used as the village seal until the beginning of the 20th century. The coat of arms was created by Prof. PhDr. Jozef Novák, DrSc., a well known Slovak heraldic. In this form the details are historically correct and it is also impressively artistic.
